Nestled among the internal parts of a sewing machine, advertised as “Wards sewing machine parts lot” on eBay, there was a plastic case with the little red cams that I had been searching for. In the end, my dedication to continued research paid off. Armed with that information, I began several months of searching online parts sites, Goodwills, Craig’slist, and eBay. Finally I found a photo of the cams that everybody was looking for. There were a couple of videos on YouTube, none of which showed the cams, but instructed how and where to attach them.įurther research led me to threads and blogs where folks were asking what their machine’s value was, or wanting to know where to purchase the cams. In my search for cams, I found that very little information was available about this machine on-line. As it turns out, the cams for this particular model are extremely rare. Since this was an on-line purchase, and being unfamiliar with sewing machines, I was unaware that I would need cams to automate the the decorative functions. To fit that bill, I purchased a Montgomery Ward – 21 Jewel Supreme Automatic Zig-Zag – Model URR 787 – Made In Japan. My first machine purchase was based purely on exploring the multiple functions of a cam operated, decorative stitch selecting, swing needle design. My interest in sewing began simply from a mechanical interest in a sewing machine’s operating mechanisms.
